Australia ‘world champions’ at obesity!
June 19th, 2008 by Richard & Joey Marc
I just opened my ninemsn homepage and saw the heading “Australia worlds fattest nation”. I thought oh no, it has happened we are now official the world’s fattest nation. It is so disheartening to see this but what we need to do now is take action!
The study has shown that 26 per cent of adult Australians - almost four million - are now obese, one million more than the last calculation in 1999. And Australia now holds the top spot as the world’s most overweight nation, ahead of the notoriously super-sized Americans, who have a 25 per cent obesity rate.
It is so scary all these studies and statistics that are released, it is almost like warning signs for the nation to shape up and get healthy!
Professor Simon Stewart, head of preventative cardiology at the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute said “That, unfortunately, makes us the heavyweight champions, a title we don’t really want,” and I agree we don’t want to be titled the heavyweight champions of the world at obesity!
It is vital our community identifies the health problems that are associated with obesity such as heart related problems, diabetes type II, cardiovascular disease, joint problems and the list goes on. These health issues need to be acknowledged and the important factor to take into consideration is “Obesity can be prevented!”.
Now is a time our community needs to stick together and help each other to lead a more healthier lifestyle. Start using the facilities in your community such as local gyms, indoor pools, parks or your backyard to get active and get healthy. But it all needs to start at home. Get healthy in your home with your partner or with your entire family.
We would like to hear from you, what are your thoughts on this topic?
Do you believe we are the world’s fattest nation?
Listen to what Joey Marc really thinks about this

I think it is embarrassing that Australia is the fattest country in the world. How scary for our next generation of kids to come through? All I know is I’m doing everything I can to encourage my 5 year old daughter to eat lots of fruits and vegetables and we only keep junk food as a treat occasionally. Maybe more of us in society need to really watch what we eat and exercise more it is that simple!

4 million Aussies are now obese, where are they all hiding?

The overweight people are not hiding Harry, I just think people don’t realise what overweight is. Some people may just think they are carrying extra weight they need to lose but in fact they are overweight in some cases.

I think most Australians are in denial! I think we are a fat country not necessarily obese and definately not as big as Americans. How many of you have travelled to Disney Land and seen people eat turkey legs as they walk from one ride to the next, my husband and I were shocked! Lord help us if we ever reach that portion!!!

Because you know, Disneyland is a WONDERFUL representation of Americans. I see more non-Americans there than Americans!

Losing weight is definetly hard work.I use to overeat, but have found alot of strenght in keeping it under control.Since then, the feeling of success I felt by sticking to my plan to loose weight and stop over eating, has kept me motivated.

Overweight females in Australia is 55% and Percentage of overweight males is a staggering 67%. The fact is that, this year Australia has the unique privilege of overtaking the USA as the fattest country in the world. The main reasons for such problems are,
* Very inactive society. Means, we are least bothered about exercising and food habits.
* The number of calories we consume in the food we eat has not dropped but increased. This has caused an energy imbalance that has created a tendency towards weight gain and obesity.
* Eating the wrong foods. In today’s world, we eat too much fast-food and junk food which are high in fat and energy density.

Obesity is really an epidemic these days. People have become very lazy and does not want to exercise anymore. I do a lot of jogging and brisk walking everyday just to be fit and healthy.

Hi,It’s really surprise me. This obesity issue is because of unhealthy lifestyle and unbalanced food. Less of exercise also will contribute to obesity.
So, we need to watch the food that we eat everyday. We need more anti-oxidant to neutralize the free radical inside our body. To get this we need to consume 5 type of fruits and 5 type of vegetables daily.
